“QUESTIONS OF PRACTICE: WHAT MAKES A GREAT EXHIBITION?”
With contributions by Glenn Adamson | Paola Antonelli with Bennett Simpson | Carlos Basualdo | Iwona Blazwick | Lynne Cooke | Thelma Golden with Glenn Ligon | Mary Jane Jacob | Jeffrey Kipnis | Paula Marincola | Detlef Mertins | Mark Nash | Ralph Rugoff | Ingrid Schaffner | Robert Storr
Rising attendance at museums and megashows plus increased press coverage in the age of the international biennial and blockbuster have translated into a growing interest in how exhibitions are made. The new art histories and the curatorial studies programs springing up across North America and Europe often deal with theoretical issues, yet one of the central questions of curatorial practice frequently remains unstated: What makes a exhibition great? In this book, 14 essays by active curators and historians address the issue head on. Their perspective on realizing high ideals in the face of budget constraints and various, sometimes conflicting, institutional and public imperatives provide pragmatic examples of thinking by doing and ways to address the public through that central nexus of art and audience: the exhibition.
This volume aims to stimulate thought about how overarching issues meet-on-the-ground practicalities. What Makes a Great Exhibition? is vital reading for arts professionals, art and curatorial studies students, art historians, practicing artists, and anyone curious about exhibition-making today.
What Makes a Great Exhibition? will be available through Reaktion Books, London and University of Chicago Press. To place your order, visit http://www.press.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/hfs.cgi/00/226520.ctl

| Curating
Now: Imaginative Practice/Public Responsibility was conceptualized
and produced as a weekend-long event in October 2000. It convened
a group of peers to assess the current state of curatorial practice,
to articulate our professional values, and test the assumptions
implicit in them. The proceedings were divided thematically into
separate but integrally related discussions of curating in both
its private (imaginative practice) and public (public
responsibility) aspects. Underlying both themes were questions
regarding curatorial power and authorship as well as inquiries into
how external pressures and challenges impact upon and shape exhibition-making
in what critic Michael Brenson characterized recently as the
era of the curator.
Participants included Robert Storr, Senior Curator, Department
of Painting and Sculpture, Museum of Modern Art, New York (co-organizer,
moderator and keynote speaker); Kathy Halbreich, Director
of the Walker Art Center, in Minneapolis (keynote speaker); Anne
dHarnoncourt, the George D. Widener Director of the Philadelphia
Museum of Art (panelist); Thelma Golden, Deputy Director
for exhibitions, the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (panelist);
Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Curator, Museé dArt Moderne
de la Ville de Paris (panelist); Mari-Carmen Ramirez, Curator
of Latin American Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (panelist);
Ned Rifkin, Director, The Menil Collection and Foundation,
Houston (panelist); Paul Schimmel, Chief Curator, Museum
of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (panelist); Nicholas Serota,
Director, Tate, London (panelist), and Dave Hickey, writer
and art critic, Professor of Art Criticism and Theory, University
of Nevada, Las Vegas (respondent).
The proceedings are now available online in PDF format here, or by contacting PEI at pei@pcah.us.
