Founded in 1848, Moore College of Art and Design is the only visual-arts college for women in the Western Hemisphere. The college's two art galleriesthe Goldie Paley Gallery and the Levy Gallery for the Arts in Philadelphiawork in unison to provide an original combination of exhibitions and educational programs. The Goldie Paley Gallery's exhibitions of challenging and innovative work by national and international artists share a common educational goal: to present traditional art in a contemporary context for reevaluation, and contemporary art in an art-historical context for critical review.
In this first exhibition of the work of Benedetta Cappa Marinetti, wife of futurism's founder Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, futurism's inconsistencies and paradoxes are revealed. Within the male-dominated movement, Benedetta created a body of work that, while actively engaging and furthering futurist ideology, was stamped with a voice uniquely female. She was able to incorporate spirituality, emotion, and family into a movement that railed against sentimentalism, romanticism, and moralism. The exhibition includes forty paintings, drawings, and literary works by Benedetta as well as related works by other futurist artists. The show brings to light Benedetta's complete artistic achievement, and investigates the relationship between futurism and women. Catalogue with text by Cinzia Blum, Lisa Panzera, Christine Poggi, and Lucia Re.
Exhibition Dates: September 8th through October 25st, 1998
