Founded in 1977, The Fabric Workshop and Museum is the only museum in the country devoted to using fabric as a material and metaphor for creating new works of art, and making these works accessible to a diverse audience through extensive educational programs. Through the acclaimed residency program, The Fabric Workshop and Museum provides artists of all disciplines the opportunity and technical support to experiment with fabric and new materials in a unique laboratory setting. Exhibition programming and educational outreach enable the public to experience contemporary art firsthand, from concept through production, presentation, and preservation.
At The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Jorge Pardo is creating an installation consisting of a video lounge/café and transformation of the entrance to the museum gallery. The exhibition, opening in April 1999, will broaden access to the museum by changing the way one enters the space, and inserting viewers directly into the work. Pardo is creating an environment within the museum where everything the visitor encounters is an object designed and fabricated as part of his residency, the use of which encourages the consideration of his art in terms of form and function. Pardo, known for his navigation of the territory between art and what is usually identified as architecture, furniture, and design, is an agent of speculation, looking to the viewer to invest the work with meaning.
Exhibition Dates: April 22, 1999 through April 30, 2000
