The Beaver College Art Gallery is a nationally recognized showcase for contemporary art in the greater Philadelphia area. Founded in 1974, the gallery is located at the Spruance Art Center within a renovated power station built by architect Horace Trumbauer (1893). During its nearly twenty-five year history, the gallery has presented over 100 individual and thematic exhibitions showcasing both local and international talent. A short list of representative shows includes exhibitions and projects by: Jennifer Bolande, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Ap. Gorny, Donald Lipski, Donald Moffett, Robert Morris, Elizabeth Murray, Rona Pondick, Ken Price, Richard Prince, Kay Rosen, James Welling, Fred Wilson, Yukinori Yanagi, Daisy Youngblood, and Meyer Vaisman.

"Period Room: A Project by Amy Hauft" is an installation featuring a horizontal plane of caned plywood frames suspended at waist-level, wall-to-wall throughout the 1200 square foot gallery space into which the artist has cut pathways leading to hand-caned chaises. Intended to examine the place of handcrafts in contemporary culture, the installation is extended by the presentation of six historic caned chairs in local collections designated at each of their locations by free souvenir multiples. A catalog with text by Connie Butler, Associate Curator, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; Patricia Phillips, Dean, S.U.N.Y. New Paltz; and Gregory Volk, critic, accompanies the project, along with lectures by Hauft, Butler, and Jack Lindsey, Curator, Department of American Decorative Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Exhibition Dates: August 18th through November 1st, 1998
