The Rosenbach Museum & Library preserves and develops collections of rare books, manuscripts, archives, and works of art so that they may educate and enlighten current and future generations. Through educational programs, exhibitions, publications, and research services, the Rosenbach fosters knowledge of art, literature, history, and the humanities for broad and diverse audiences.
The Rosenbach presents an exhibition entitled "Drifting to the Southeast" in one of its most significant illuminated manuscripts, known as the Manjiro Manuscript, an 1852 account of the experiences of the first Japanese person to visit the United States. The manuscript is exhibited in the context of related fine art and documents of the period, and the project includes numerous multi-media programs and educational opportunities for a diverse range of audiences.
Project Dates: October - December 1999
