"Wall Power" is a collaborative project of the Institute of Contemporary Art, The Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial and the Philadelphia Department of Recreation's Mural Arts Program. The ICA's mission is to develop, affirm, and challenge the public's understanding of contemporary art by providing a forum for innovative art of the present and recent past through pioneering exhibitions, scholarship, and educational programs. Since its founding in 1963, ICA has presented exhibitions by Clyford Still, Andy Warhol, Agnes Martin, Christo, Laurie Anderson, Glenn Ligon, Jenny Holzer, and Sol LeWitt, and many other contemporary artists.

The Fleisher Art Memorial was founded in 1898 as a free-tuition art school and gallery for adults and children. In the spirit of its founder, the Fleisher Art Memorial invites "the world to come and learn art" through classes, exhibitions, workshops, residencies and performances.

The Philadelphia Department of Recreation Mural Arts Program is a city-supported public art program that works in partnership with neighborhood residents, young people, artists, institutions, corporations and other organizations to create murals of enduring value that reflect the city's diverse communities. Since its inception in 1984, MAP has painted over 1,800 murals in neighborhoods around the city and worked with thousands of young people.

"Wall Power" explores the artistic, social, and political impact of murals by placing them in a broader historical and cultural context. The exhibition includes billboard art installations throughout Philadelphia as well as an indoor exhibition and is documented by a catalog with essays by Tim Drescher, Robin Rice, and Sharon Zukin. A handbook of self-guided tours and other educational programming also supplement the exhibit.

Project Dates: May 2000 - July 2000
