The Brandywine River Museum collects, preserves, exhibits, and interprets American art with a primary emphasis on the art of the Brandywine region, still-life painting and illustration. Its collections of work by Wyeth family members are well known, as are its changing exhibitions, public programs, and scholarly publications. The museum's core building is a 19th century gristmill where exhibitions are offered. The museum also conducts educational programs at the restored N.C. Wyeth studio in Chadds Ford.

The exhibition "Milk and Eggs: The Revival of Tempera Painting in America, 1930-1950" presents, defines, and analyzes the phenomenon of tempera painting's rebirth in America. The exhibit defines the tempera painting through technical analysis, investigates why unconnected artists across the country concurrently shared in the revival of this technique, and reintroduces the work of neglected artists. A comprehensive publication with essays by Richard Boyle, Hilton Brown, Gene Harris and Richard Newman, as well as extensive educational program, accompany the exhibit.

Project Dates: March 2002 - May 2002
