Project: James Castle: A Retrospective. This is the first comprehensive exhibition of the work
of one of America’s primary self-taught artists. James Castle (1899-1977) spent his life making art
as a deaf, non-speaking man in rural Idaho. Castle was extremely prolific, but his work was rarely
shown during his lifetime and has been seen primarily in dealer shows since the late 1990s. This
retrospective and its substantial catalogue will provide the first major scholarly consideration by
a leading museum of Castle’s work.
