Tom Chimes Portrait of Antonin Artaud, 1974 Oil on panel 17 ¾ x 14 3/8 inches Philadelphia Museum of Art This portrait of Antonin Artaud shows the French artist, writer, and theatrical innovator as he appeared in 1920, when he was still suffering from the traumatic effects of the First World War. Artaud’s mental stability was severely and irrevocably impaired by his military service, and Chimes’s depiction of his rolling eyes and severe facial features brilliantly captures his tortured sensibility. In 1926, Artaud co-founded the Alfred Jarry Theatre in Paris, where he revived the extreme tactics and shocking iconoclasm of the Ubu plays. |
