Project: Taken With Time, presents newly commissioned works by artists Ann Hamilton, Vera Lutter, and Abelardo Morell. For the first time, this project brings together three contemporary artists of international significance in the field of photography, who have each taken a different and innovative approach to reviving the camera obscura – the oldest and simplest photographic device. Hamilton either places the camera in her mouth or makes a portable box and her images of gatherings become visual imprints of time. Lutter prefers large cavernous spaces like shipping containers, and her negative images have a ghostly sense of temporality. Morell turns entire rooms into cameras and the inverted images document within a single frame at least two universes, one rigid and static, the other upside down and floating on its surface. Camera obscuras will be temporarily installed by the artists in different Philadelphia locations, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the final images, some of which will be of monumental scale, will be presented in an exhibition with an accompanying catalogue, lectures and a public performance.

Project Dates: May 2005-December 2006
