 Artur Barrio
Situation T/T, 1 (parts 1-3)
Performance Documentation
1970
Bundles of bread and other foods, bodily waste, meat, trash, bones, tools –so called “bloody bundles” – assembled by the artist were deposited, surreptitiously, in Rio de Janeiro and then monitored by the artist and his photographer/cinematographer associates. Thousands of people were drawn to the site by the grisly objects and by the safety, police, and military personnel dispatched to the scene. Barrio prepared the “bloody bundles” in a rhythmic, almost ritualistic fashion, and this aspect of the work should not be overlooked. The political dimensions of this work are significant – and they resonate with accounts of Latin American art that, repeatedly, pit avant-gardes against a succession of repressive forces – but it is important to note a sheer physicality and intense subjectivity that connects Barrio to Ana Mendiata and other artists not, until now, associated with his work.
