Project: Ed Ruscha, as an artist-in-residence, will create a new book or print project – formats that he has explored with great innovation since the beginning of his career. In addition to this collaboration to create new work, the Fabric Workshop and Musem will also organize the first major exhibition of his work organized in Philadelphia, with guest curator Paul Schimmel, Chief Curator, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Ruscha, who will represent the United States at this year’s Venice Biennale, is one of the most significant artists working today. He is known not only for his broad range of visual styles, but also for his experimentation with conventional and unconventional materials, such as powdered graphite, gunpowder, fruit and vegetable juices, Vaseline, blood, and even rose-petal, leaf, and tobacco stains. A major publication with an artists’ interview will accompany this residency project and exhibition, as will a lecture series, gallery tours, and family workshops.
Project Dates: May 2005-February 2007
